Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that the government is attaching special importance to increasing agricultural production by ensuring irrigation facilities.
He said that many agricultural lands in the Sylhet region are deprived of additional crop production due to lack of irrigation water during the dry season. To solve this problem, a 6-kilometer-long Banshikhal will be dug from Jangail to Balaura.
He said these things at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the 'Dug out Banshikhal from Jangail Surma River to Balaura Zilkar Haor' project in Sylhet Sadar Upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The minister said that once the canal is dug, about 6,000 hectares of agricultural land will come under irrigation facilities. As a result, farmers will get the opportunity to produce additional crops, increase their income and make a significant contribution to increasing the country's food production.
Khandaker Muktadir said that the newly elected government is committed to implementing the election promises made to the people. Within just 21 days of the government assuming office, initiatives have been taken to implement various development programs. As part of this, family card distribution activities have started in different parts of the country.
The minister also said that the development plans that the government presented to the people during the election will be implemented in phases. Through this, the government will work to improve the living standards of the people of Sylhet and the whole country.
Later, the Commerce Minister inaugurated the excavation work of Banshikhal.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khoshnur Rubaiyat were present at the event. Sadar Upazila BNP President Abul Kashem and local political and dignitaries were present.
