US President Donald Trump has hinted at taking control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy supply routes.

In an interview with CBS News, he said that the White House is currently 'thinking' about taking direct control of this strategic waterway and that the United States has the ability to do 'a lot' in this regard.

Commercial shipping through this strait has virtually come to a standstill since the conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States began. It is worth noting that about one-fifth of the world's total oil supply is transported through this route. Although Iran has not officially closed the strait yet, it has clearly warned that any US or Israeli tanker trying to pass through this route will be attacked.

President Trump's controversial comments came at a time when there is extreme concern about global energy security. Analysts believe that if the United States really tries to take control of this waterway, the war in the Middle East could take a terrible turn, which would push the global economy into an unprecedented crisis.
