UN expresses condolences over Bangladesh earthquake

The United Nations has expressed its condolences over the loss of life in the Bangladesh earthquake. The condolences were expressed in a post on social media Facebook on Friday (November 21).
It said that the United Nations is closely monitoring the impact of the earthquake in Dhaka. We express our deepest condolences and solidarity with all those affected by the earthquake.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Dhaka expressed its deepest condolences in a post on its official Facebook page on social media. The post read, "We express our deepest condolences to all those affected by today's earthquake."
Earlier, at 10:38 am on Friday, a terrible earthquake hit various parts of the country including the capital Dhaka. Eight people were reported to have died in it. Of these, three were killed in Bangshale in the capital's Old Dhaka, two in Narayanganj and three in Narsingdi. More than fifty people were also reported to have been injured.
Three people were killed when the railing of a 5-storey building collapsed in Bangshale in Old Dhaka. On Friday (November 21), Deputy Police Commissioner of Lalbagh Division of DMP, Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, confirmed the matter to Channel 24. It is learned that a child is among the three people killed in the railing collapse. However, the names and identities of the deceased were not immediately known.
A woman died after a wall collapsed in a terrible earthquake in Rupganj Upazila of the district. Her daughter was injured at the time. The incident took place in Murapara Union of the upazila at around 10:30 am on Friday (November 21).
Locals said that soon after the earthquake was felt, an old wall of the house collapsed and the mother and daughter were crushed. The mother died on the spot. The injured girl was rescued by locals and admitted to the hospital. The matter was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station, Tariqul Islam.
A child named Fatema (1) died when a wall of a tin-shed house collapsed in the same upazila during the earthquake. At that time, the child's mother Kulsum Begum and neighbor Jasmine Begum were injured. The incident took place in the Islambagh area of Golakandail in the upazila at 10:38 am.
Locals said that Kulsum Begum of Islambagh area of Golakandail was walking towards Bhulta Gauchia area with her daughter Fatema during the earthquake. At that time, the wall of a tin-shed house on the side of the road collapsed and crushed Fatema, killing her on the spot. Her mother Kulsum Begum and neighbor Jasmine Begum were injured. The injured were later rescued and admitted to a local private hospital.
In this regard, Inspector Mokhlesur Rahman of Bhulta Police Outpost said that a child named Fatema died when the wall collapsed in the earthquake. At that time, the child's mother Kulsum Begum and neighbor Jasmine Begum were seriously injured.
In the earthquake, a child named Omar (10) and three others were killed when the sunshade of a house collapsed in the Gabtoli area of Sadar upazila of Narsingdi. Her father Delwar Hossain Ujjal was seriously injured in the incident. When relatives brought the two to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 1:15 pm, doctors declared Omar dead.
Omar's uncle Zakir Hossain said at the hospital that his father, Delwar Hossain, was going out with Omar and his three children when the earthquake struck. At that time, the sunroof of the house collapsed and they were seriously injured. Later, locals took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. From there, when the father and son were taken to Dhaka Medical College, doctors declared Omar dead. The two daughters are admitted to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.
Earlier, at 10:38 am, a terrible earthquake hit various parts of the country, including the capital. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the intensity of the earthquake was 5.7 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was Madhavadi in Narsingdi.
Meanwhile, there were reports of buildings tilting in several places in the capital due to this terrible earthquake. Among them, a 6-story building in Armanitola in Old Dhaka is reported to have tilted.
On the other hand, an earthquake was felt in neighboring India and Pakistan as well as Bangladesh on Friday morning. The tremors were felt in various areas of Kolkata and West Bengal. In addition, the media NDTV reported, according to the National Earthquake Center, that an earthquake was felt in Pakistan on Friday morning. Its epicenter was 135 kilometers deep.
It is worth noting that a moderate earthquake was felt in the capital on March 5 this year. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6 on the Richter scale. Before that, another earthquake struck near Moirang city in Manipur state of India at 2:24 am Bangladesh time on May 28. At that time, the earthquake also felt light tremors in the northeastern part of the country, including the capital Dhaka and some neighboring districts.
