The Indian Coast Guard has detained 79 fishermen, including three Bangladeshi boats, on charges of trespassing into India's exclusive economic zone by violating international waters. The Bangladeshi fishermen were detained while conducting surveillance along the international maritime boundary line on November 15 and 16, The Hindustan Times reported.

The Indian Coast Guard claimed that the Bangladeshi fishermen were fishing within their waters, but could not show valid permits. The boats seized from the sea contained fresh fish and other fishing equipment, which the Coast Guard seized. After the detention, the boats and fishermen were taken to Frazerganj in West Bengal and handed over to the local naval police. Further legal action will be taken against them.

Incidents of Bangladeshi fishermen being detained from the sea by the Indian Coast Guard are frequent. There are allegations of detentions even from within Bangladeshi waters.

On the other hand, earlier on October 23, the Bangladesh Navy arrested 9 Indian fishermen along with a trawler from the deep sea adjacent to the fairway buoy off the Mongla seaport.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mongla Police Station Md. Anisur Rahman said that all of them were residents of Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district of India. They were later sent to jail through legal process.
