Bangladesh has urged India to hand over fugitive convicts Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal after the death sentence was handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity.
The notification said, "In today's verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal, fugitive convicts Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been found guilty and sentenced for the July massacre. If any other country gives shelter to these persons convicted of crimes against humanity, it will be a very unfriendly act and a contempt of justice."
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said, "We urge the Indian government to immediately hand over these two convicted persons to the Bangladesh authorities. According to the extradition treaty existing between the two countries, this is also a duty for India to fulfill."
Bangladesh had formally requested Sheikh Hasina to be sent back several times before. A letter was also sent for this purpose. However, India has not responded to such requests.
In response to questions from journalists, Bangladesh's foreign affairs adviser has repeatedly stated that Bangladesh has sent a letter requesting his return. However, there has been no positive response from India.
