The Indian government has said that barbed wire has been installed along almost 80 percent of India's international border with Bangladesh. Delhi claims that this initiative has been taken to prevent infiltration and security risks. In addition, government data presented in Parliament has revealed that hundreds of kilometers of the India-Bangladesh border are still without barbed wire. In addition, India has also said that barbed wire has been installed along 93 percent of the Pakistan border.
Indian media outlet NDTV says that the country's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has said that barbed wire has been installed along a large part of India's international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh to strengthen security and prevent infiltration. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said this in a written reply given in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
He said that out of the total 2,289.66 km of the India-Pakistan international border, barbed wire has been installed in 2,135.136 km. This is 93.25 percent of the total border. The remaining 154.524 km, or 6.75 percent, has not yet been barbed wire installed.
Similarly, barbed wire has been installed in 3,239.92 km of the 4,96.70 km long India-Bangladesh international border. This has made it possible to cover 79.08 percent of the total border area with barbed wire. Still, 856.778 km, or 20.92 percent of the border is without barbed wire.
In addition, the government of the country has also reported progress on the India-Myanmar border. So far, barbed wire has been installed in 9.214 km of this 1,643 km long border. The government has said that installing barbed wire on the border is an important part of its strategy to prevent infiltration and ensure national security.
When Trinamool Congress MPs Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia and Sharmila Sarkar asked about the length and percentage of the border without barbed wire, Nityanand Rai gave this information in response to the question.
NDTV says that India's total land border is 15,106.7 km long and the coastline including islands is 7,516.6 km. India has land borders with seven neighboring countries. India has a long border with Pakistan in the west through Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat. This also includes the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
In addition, India has a sensitive border with China in the north and northeast through Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. This border is entirely marked by the Line of Actual Control. At the same time, India has open and friendly borders with Nepal in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim. People move freely through these borders.
India has borders with Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India has a peaceful and strategic border with Bhutan through Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. India's longest land border extends to Bangladesh, touching West Bengal and the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Further east, India has a border with Myanmar through Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram.
India also has a small border with Afghanistan in the northwest through the Wakhan Corridor. In addition to the land border, India has maritime borders with Sri Lanka through the Palk Strait and the Maldives in the Arabian Sea.
