UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the killing of Osman Hadi, the convener of the Inqilab Manch. He also called on the Bangladeshi authorities to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation in accordance with international human rights standards. The Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric made this information at a briefing at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday (December 19).
Dujarric said at the briefing that the killing of Osman Hadi has come to the attention of the United Nations. The Secretary-General condemned the incident and expressed his condolences to his family.
Regarding the situation in Bangladesh, the UN Secretary-General said that in the context of increasing tension ahead of the country's elections, all parties must refrain from violence. He called on those concerned to remain calm and said that all parties must exercise maximum restraint to reduce tension and avoid violence, so that a peaceful electoral environment is maintained.
Earlier, the UN Human Rights Commission issued a statement expressing deep concern over the killing of Osman Hadi. The organization also called on the Bangladesh government to conduct a prompt, impartial, thorough and transparent investigation into the killing. In a statement, Human Rights Commissioner Falkar Turk stressed the need to maintain peace in the country and ensure accountability for those responsible.
In a statement sent from Geneva, the UN Human Rights Commissioner said he was deeply shocked by the killing of Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the student and public movement in Bangladesh last year. He noted that Hadi died while receiving treatment in Singapore on Thursday after being shot last week. He said in the statement that revenge will only deepen divisions and undermine the rights of all.
