A fresh diplomatic tension has arisen between the two countries over the threat of Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the southern region of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (NCP), to separate India's northeastern region. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly reacted to Hasnat's threat.

Speaking at an all-party protest rally against the assassination attempt on Osman Hadi organized by Inquilab Manch at Shaheed Minar on Monday (December 15), Hasnat Abdullah said, 'If India does not respect Bangladesh's sovereignty, voting rights and human rights, then Bangladesh can shelter anti-India forces and separatist groups. India's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her patrons are raising people against Bangladesh by providing money, weapons and training. Those who have made Delhi a 'kebla' for the greed of power, positions and ministries are preparing to sell Bangladesh's independence for the third time.'

He also said, 'Even after 54 years of independence, we have to struggle for freedom from the hands of vultures. Once again, vultures are trying to put their paws on the map of Bangladesh. If India tries to destabilize Bangladesh, the 'fire of resistance' will spread beyond the border.'

He declared resistance by calling those who want to control Bangladesh even after 54 years of independence 'vultures'. He also alleged that India wants to turn Bangladesh into another Palestinian state.

Indian officials condemned Hasnat Abdullah's comments as 'irresponsible and dangerous'. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The idea of merging or separating India’s northeast with Bangladesh is completely irresponsible and dangerous.”

He said, “In the last one year, there have been repeated statements that India’s northeast should be separated and merged with Bangladesh.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said, “India is a big country, a nuclear power and the world’s fourth largest economy. How can Bangladesh think like this?”

He warned, “India will not remain silent if such hostile behavior continues. If necessary, a lesson may have to be taught.”

It is worth noting that Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura constitute the northeast of India. Out of these seven states, Bangladesh has a land border with four states.
