Canada produced the most one-sided match of the World Cup so far, thrashing Qatar 6–0 in a game marked by two red cards and a dominant attacking display from Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick.
Canada opened the scoring in the 16th minute after sustained pressure. Tajon Buchanan delivered an excellent byline cross from the right, finding David, whose powerful shot was initially saved by Qatar goalkeeper Abounada. However, the rebound fell kindly for Cyle Larin, who tapped the ball into an empty net to make it 1–0.
Canada doubled their lead in the 29th minute through another fluid attack. Buchanan surged forward from midfield before setting up a left-footed effort that deflected off a defender and fell to David inside the box. The forward made no mistake, striking a precise volley into the bottom corner to make it 2–0.
Controversy followed in the 31st minute when Buchanan was brought down, initially leading the referee to award a penalty and issue a yellow card to Al Amin. However, after VAR review, the foul was found to be outside the box, resulting in a direct free-kick instead. As Al Amin was the last defender denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, the yellow card was upgraded to a straight red, reducing Qatar to 10 men in the 33rd minute.
Before halftime, Canada extended their lead further in the 45+3 minute. A dangerous cross from Buchanan again caused panic in the Qatar defence. Larin’s effort was saved superbly by Abounada, but the rebound fell perfectly for David, who finished clinically to make it 3–0 and complete his brace.
Qatar’s situation worsened early in the second half when a dangerous tackle on Ismael Kone led to Asim Madibo receiving a yellow card, which was upgraded to red after VAR intervention. Kone was stretchered off with a serious injury.
Down to nine men, Qatar collapsed defensively as Canada added three more goals. Substitute Saliba, introduced after Kone’s injury, made an immediate impact by scoring from a stunning 20-yard free-kick in the 64th minute, making it 4–0. In celebration, he dedicated the goal by holding up Kone’s shirt.
The fifth goal came in the 75th minute and was recorded as an own goal. Buchanan delivered another dangerous cross, Schaeffelburg’s volley appeared to be heading wide, but defender Al Manei’s attempted clearance only diverted the ball into his own net.
Jonathan David completed his hat-trick in stoppage time (90+2), reacting quickest inside the box after a blocked effort from Saliba. Turning sharply, he fired a powerful finish past the helpless Abounada to seal a remarkable 6–0 victory.
With this commanding win, Canada strengthened their position in the group while Qatar endured a night to forget.
