Dr. Garger said, 50 to 100 hairs are completely normal every day. Just as our body regularly sheds old skin and creates new cells, so too does the scalp shed old hair and makes room for new hair.
Are you suddenly losing a lot of hair, is this worrying you? Do you wonder why so much hair is falling? You are not alone. Most people face this panic at some point in their lives. However, according to experts, not all hair loss is terrible. Rather, some hair loss every day is a completely normal process. Dr. Gaurav Gar, a renowned dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon in Delhi, has spoken in detail about this. He explains in simple terms what is normal hair loss, and when to understand that it is a matter of concern.
Dr. Garger said, 50 to 100 hairs are completely normal every day. Just as our body regularly sheds old skin and creates new cells, so does the scalp shed old hair and makes room for new hair.
On average, we have about one lakh hair follicles on our head. But not all hair grows at the same time, nor do they fall out at the same time. Some hair is growing, some is resting, and some is preparing to fall out. Because of this natural cycle, some hair falls out every day. So there is nothing to be afraid of when you see a few strands of hair falling out in the mirror.
Sometimes, you suddenly lose a lot of hair one day. This happens especially after fever, childbirth, rapid weight loss, surgery, or deep emotional stress. This is called telogen effluvium in medical terms. Dr. Garg explains that when the body copes with a big shock, many hairs go into the ‘resting phase’ to save energy. After a few weeks or months, those hairs suddenly start falling out all at once. Usually, this hair loss is noticeable about 90 days after the incident. The scary thing is that this type of hair loss is not permanent in most cases. When the stress reduces and the body returns to normal, the hair starts growing again.
When will you know it is really serious
Although all hair loss is normal, sometimes it should not be ignored at all. Dr. Garg says that it is important to seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms. These include:
Bald patches
If a smooth, round bald patch suddenly appears on your head, it could be alopecia areata.
Widening of the front or temples
Thinning hair from the sides of your forehead or a wider pattern of temples than before can be signs of hair loss. The sooner it is caught, the better it is to protect your hair.
Pain, redness, or irritation with hair loss
If there is pain, itching, or redness in the area where your hair is falling out, it is a sign of a problem with the hair follicles. This could be an indication of infection or permanent damage.
Hair loss is not a serious condition. It is normal for our body to shed some hair every day. However, if you suddenly experience abnormal hair loss, bald patches, or pain, it is not a good idea to take it lightly. Pay attention to changes in your hair, don't panic and be aware. If necessary, you can consult a dermatologist.
