Experts have warned that eye exercises should not be seen as a substitute for glasses or contact lenses. Just as physical exercise is important for our physical well-being, there has been a recent surge in interest in the potential benefits of eye exercises.

People who wear glasses or contact lenses try these exercises to improve or reduce their vision. Some people report experiencing temporary relief or slight improvement, but experts warn that it is important to have realistic expectations.

A common eye exercise is ‘eye push-ups.’ In this, a person usually closes one eye and brings a finger forward and slowly brings it to the eye for about 30 seconds. This improves the eye’s ability to focus.

According to experts, such exercises activate the ciliary muscles of the eye, which help focus on near and far objects. However, scientific research has not yet proven that these exercises can permanently correct myopia (fixed farsightedness) or hypermetropia (farsightedness).

Eye movements, focus changes, or eye contact exercises can help reduce eye fatigue, irritation, or dryness. This is especially true for those who spend long hours in front of a computer or mobile phone.

There are other things to remember for eye health – taking breaks after spending long hours in front of a screen, working in adequate lighting, maintaining proper posture, and eating a balanced diet.

While exercises like eye push-ups can provide temporary relief and eye rest, they are not a permanent solution to improving vision or replacing the need for glasses. Experts believe that following health advice and protective measures is the safest way to protect your eyes.
