Colds in children are common during weather changes. Many parents give cough syrup to their children first. But is it really safe? Recently, Dr. Indu Khosla, Senior Consultant, Department of Pediatric Pulmonology, Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, Mumbai, gave a message to raise awareness on this issue. She said that although syrup is used as a cough medicine, it is not safe to use unnecessarily or excessively. Some syrups are not suitable for children, so it is very important for parents to be careful.

Potential risks of cough syrup

Dr. Khosla said that cough syrup contains various compounds. Especially the cough medicine called dextromethorphan, if given in inappropriate doses to children, can cause problems like drowsiness, vomiting, or breathing problems. In addition, first-generation antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine or diphenhydramine are not safe for children under two years of age, as they can cause excessive sleepiness or respiratory problems.
Dr. Indu Khosla said that parents should check the ingredients on the label. Some cough syrups may contain toxic compounds called diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol, which can cause serious problems for children.

Safer alternative: Dr. Khosla mentioned that cough syrup should not be considered as the only solution for cold or cough. In fact, not all types of coughs require immediate treatment. Usually, children who cough due to viral infections or seasonal changes recover within a few days with adequate home care and minimal medication. Dr. Indu Khosla gave some suggestions to ensure the well-being of the child. These are:

Drinking enough water and staying hydrated;
Intake of warm fluids;
Using saline nasal drops;
Maintaining moisture in the air by using a humidifier.
In some cases, saline nebulization can also be helpful under medical supervision. However, if the cough persists for more than two weeks or is accompanied by shortness of breath or fever, then it is imperative to consult a pediatrician. Not every cough needs to be treated immediately with cough syrup. Many times, home care and rest are enough. Parents should be aware and, if necessary, consult a pediatrician to ensure that their children are healthy.
