Tensions have been created in several cities in France after the 2-0 World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain. Clashes broke out between police and supporters in several areas, including Paris and Lyon, after the match. Law enforcement agencies have arrested more than 160 people in the two cities in an operation to bring the situation under control.

French media outlet 'BFMTV' reported that 141 people were arrested in the capital Paris alone. According to the police prefecture, most of the arrests were due to the throwing of firecracker mortars at police officers and emergency workers.

On the other hand, hundreds of fans watched the semi-final on a big screen at Lyon's Place Belcourt. Many were still there after the match ended. Later, the situation became heated when several small groups threw various objects, especially fireworks, at security forces.

The police took the help of the riot control unit CRS 83 to control the situation. Later, the protesters were dispersed in a joint operation and about 20 people were arrested. According to the local administration, most of the arrested people are young people born between 2002 and 2011.

However, there is some relief in the whole incident. Authorities said that no serious injuries were reported during the clashes. Besides, there have been no reports of significant damage to government or private property so far.
