It took more than 30 hours to extinguish a fire on the USS Gerald R. Ford, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Hundreds of US sailors were left homeless in the fire that broke out last week.

Citing US military officials and the ship's crew, the media reported that the fire started in the ship's main laundry area. Possibly in a dryer vent. From there, the fire spread to various parts of the ship through a ventilation duct.

The New York Times reported that sailors were finally able to bring the fire under control after battling the fire in multiple areas for more than a day.

More than 600 sailors and crew lost their bunks in the incident. Many are now sleeping on the ship's floor, tables or makeshift accommodations due to damage from the fire or smoke. The warship, which carries about 4,500 sailors and airmen, has been deployed for more than 10 months.

Despite the severity of the fire, the US military's Central Command said the ship's engines and propulsion systems were not damaged and it remains fully operational.

Two sailors were slightly injured in the incident and several others were reported to be ill from smoke inhalation.

The extended deployment has put new strains on the warship. The ship was first sent to the Mediterranean, then the Caribbean and most recently to the Middle East.

Naval experts say such long deployments put strain on both the ship and its crew. They delay maintenance and put additional strain on equipment designed for short-term use.

The fire is the latest example of a series of technical and logistical problems aboard the Gerald R. Ford. The ship has previously been plagued by maintenance issues, including plumbing problems. The ship is currently continuing its flight operations and serving as part of the US Navy's forward military presence.

However, officials said another carrier strike group could arrive soon to replace it.
