Daniel Medvedev reached the final of the Indian Wells tennis tournament by defeating world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. He defeated the Spanish star 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). His opponent in the title-deciding match will be world number two Yannick Cener.

This is Alcaraz's first defeat of the 2026 season. He won 16 consecutive matches after winning the Australian Open earlier this year. Medvedev broke that streak this time.

Medvedev was in control from the start of the match. He won the first set 6-3 in just 35 minutes. However, the competition intensified in the second set. In the end, the 30-year-old Russian star secured the match by leading 7-3 in the tiebreak.

After the victory, Medvedev said that it always feels different to beat the best player in the world. According to him, ranking is not that important against opponents like Alcaraz, Cener or Novak Djokovic; playing against them is as special as winning is even more important.

Alcaraz praised his opponent even after the defeat. He said that Medvedev played amazingly from start to finish and he has never seen such a performance before.

Cener made it to the final by defeating Alexander Verev of Germany 6–2, 6–4 in the other semifinal. The Italian star, who has been in great form throughout the tournament, will play his first final in Indian Wells.

This final holds special significance for Cener. If he wins the title, he will become the third player after Roger Federer and Djokovic to win six hard court ATP Masters 1000 titles.
