Now X shows which country the account originated from, Trump in extreme trouble
After the new feature launched by Elon Musk-owned social media platform X to increase transparency, one surprise after another has started to emerge. It has been found that the X accounts of many influential influencers of Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again (MAGA)' movement are actually not operated in the United States, but from abroad.
Since last Friday, users have been able to see X's new feature 'About This Account'. By clicking on this option, it is known which country the account is operated from, when it joined the platform, how many times the username has changed, and even how the X app was downloaded.
As soon as the feature was launched, political rivals on the platform started checking each other's accounts. It was later discovered that many of the accounts of major pro-Trump ‘MAGA’ and right-wing influencers were based outside the United States – particularly in Russia, India and Nigeria.
Democratic influencer Harry Sison wrote on social media, ‘Today is truly a great day. It is a great relief for Democrats like us to see so many MAGA accounts being foreign in nature.’
For example, the account ‘MAGANationX’ – which describes itself as the ‘patriotic voice of We the People’ – with nearly four lakh followers is run from Eastern Europe.
On the other hand, the fan account ‘IvankaNews’ run by Ivanka Trump, which has one million followers, is also run from Nigeria, not the United States. This handle, filled with Islamophobic posts, anti-illegal immigration propaganda and various messages in favor of Trump, has been in the news for a long time.
"This is an earthquake for the online right-wing," wrote left-wing lawyer and influencer Micah Erfan in X. "It seems like a large part of them have been operating from abroad for so long, pretending to be American."
Shortly after the feature was launched, X's head of product development, Nikita Beer, said the feature still has some "bugs" and will be fixed soon. The company plans to make it more perfect, especially since the use of a VPN makes it possible to hide the real location of the account.
Many users reported that the feature disappeared within a few hours of being activated. Many believe that it was temporarily removed after the real location of a large number of right-wing accounts was revealed.
