A deadly drone strike in Ukraine has rocked Russia. A massive fire broke out after Ukrainian drones struck two large logistics warehouses of the country's largest online retailer Wildberries. Russian officials said the twin attacks had killed eight people and injured at least 62.

Giving details of the damage, officials said seven night workers were killed on the spot and 25 others were injured in a drone strike at a warehouse in the city of Tambov, about 475 kilometers southeast of Moscow.

The governor of the Tambov region, Evgeny Parvyshov, described it as the "largest and most inhumane" drone strike in the region's history. On the other hand, a drone strike at a second Wildberries warehouse in the Elektrostal area of the Moscow region killed one person and injured 37.

Videos circulating on social media showed flames and black smoke billowing from the massive logistics buildings, as panicked workers ran for their lives into parking lots.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Ukrainian forces had targeted “key logistics facilities” in Russia that were being used to produce drones and supply banned materials such as navigation equipment.

He added that the operation had also included successful strikes in the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea and Russian-occupied Crimea. He said the move was in response to Russia’s recent barbaric attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and cities.

Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyev said eight of the injured at the Elektrostal warehouse were in critical condition. He added that some 48 Ukrainian drones had been shot down in the region overnight.

However, debris from a downed drone hit a Russian oil depot, causing extensive damage and a fire. President Zelensky also confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck an oil facility.

Wildberries, often referred to as Russia’s “Amazon,” is hugely popular in the Russian market. According to Forbes Russia’s valuation in 2026, the company had a market value of around $12.6 billion. Following the devastating attack, Wildberries CEO Tatyana Kim expressed deep sorrow, saying it was a “terrible night” for Russia and its company.

Ukraine has recently dramatically increased its long-range drone attacks targeting energy and logistics infrastructure inside Russia. Kiev claims that about 43 percent of Russia’s oil refinery capacity has already been disabled, leading to a severe fuel shortage in the Russian domestic market.

According to Ukraine, Russian oil and gas facilities are perfectly legitimate military targets, as Moscow is using the money it earns from these energy exports to pay for its aggression in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin himself recently admitted that the Ukrainian attack has caused an energy crisis in the country and has passed new laws to deal with the situation. Currently, Russian fire services and emergency rescue teams are continuing rescue operations at the scene.
