Trump to visit China in May

US President Donald Trump will visit China in May. This will be his first visit to Beijing in eight years. The previously scheduled visit was postponed due to the ongoing Iran war.
In a post on his social media account Truth Social on Wednesday (March 25) local time, Trump said that he will visit Beijing on May 14 and 15.
He also said that he will welcome Xi Jinping to visit Washington later this year.
Trump said, "Preparations for these historic visits are in the final stages. I look forward to spending time with President Xi. It will undoubtedly be a significant event."
However, the Chinese embassy said that they are unable to provide any information at this time. Beijing usually does not release President Xi's travel schedule until a few days in advance.
This long-planned visit and efforts to rebuild US relations in the Asia-Pacific region have been repeatedly postponed due to various events.
In February, the US Supreme Court limited the president's power to impose tariffs, a key diplomatic tool for Trump. Later that month, he joined a joint military operation with Israel against Iran, which is a major buyer of Iranian oil, sparking renewed tensions with Beijing.
Trump's last visit to China in 2017 was the last by a US president. The trip in May will be the first face-to-face meeting since their last direct meeting. They had previously reached a tentative agreement on trade in South Korea in October.
