Egypt inaugurates world’s largest museum next to pyramids

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has been officially inaugurated next to the pyramids in Egypt. It is the world's largest archaeological museum, where the civilization and history of ancient Egypt are being exhibited alone.

The opening ceremony was attended by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and delegations from 79 countries, including heads of state and royal families from 39 countries, at the evening local time on Saturday (November 1). Colorful cultural performances were organized behind the pyramids. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly called it 'Egypt's gift to humanity' and said that a 30-year dream has come true. Anadolu Agency reports.

What will be in GEM: More than 57,000 artifacts have found a place in the exhibition. More than 5,000 artifacts of Tutankhamun will be displayed together for the first time. There is a huge statue of Ramesses II there. There will also be 12 main galleries and a special museum for children.

Located just 2 km from the Pyramids of Giza, this museum covers an area of ​​490,000 square meters. It looks like a 'fourth pyramid' when viewed from above. The project cost about a billion dollars, most of which came from two loans from Japan ($800 million) and Egypt's own financing.
