Most Americans blame President Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress for the month-long government shutdown in the United States.
A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post, ABC News and Ipsos found that 45 percent of Americans blame Trump and his party, the Republican Party. On the other hand, 33 percent of citizens blame Democrats for the shutdown.
The survey found that the general public is also growing concerned about the prolonged government shutdown. Three-quarters of Americans said they are "very" or "somewhat" concerned about the situation. The level of concern is highest among low-income families and Democratic supporters.
According to a Washington Post report, thousands of federal government employees are already going without pay. In addition, many important government programs are also at a standstill.
The government shutdown, which began on October 1, began after the funding expired, when Republicans and Democrats clashed over the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Democrats have demanded new subsidies for health insurance plans, while Republicans have insisted on passing a comprehensive spending bill first.
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer accused Trump of playing a political joke, saying, "Americans are seeing with their own eyes what Trump is doing... Donald Trump is solely responsible for this shutdown, and the people know it."
Republican Senator John Barrasso, on the other hand, countered, saying, "The American people are tired of the Democrats' dangerous political game. They are holding the normal functioning of government hostage."
The online survey of 2,725 American adults was conducted between October 24 and 28.
Analysts say that if the impasse continues until November 5, it will be the longest government shutdown in US history.
