President Donald Trump has reiterated his old regrets while delivering a speech at Mount Rushmore on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. While mentioning the various achievements of the United States, he complained that he has not yet been awarded the Nobel Prize.

Trump made these comments while highlighting the various discoveries and advancements of Americans, as well as the country's dominance in music, sports and culture. He said that Americans have won the most Olympic medals and the most Nobel Prizes of any country in the world. He immediately added in a tone of regret, but, they have not given me one.

Trump complained that despite settling 'eight wars', he was not awarded the prize; although this is an exaggerated claim that he often makes. It is worth noting that more than 420 American citizens have received the Nobel Prize so far for their contributions to the highest good of mankind in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace, which is the highest in the world.

Trump has long had a vested interest in the prestigious award. He even publicly lobbied for it early in his second term. In January, he said that no one in history was more deserving of the award.

In the end, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Karina Machado. In January, he announced that he would award Trump his medal, but the Nobel committee quickly made it clear that it was purely symbolic. In a statement at the time, the committee said that no matter who gets the medal or the prize money, the original recipient will go down in history as the true winner.

The president’s desire to be recognized for his diplomatic efforts is well-known to White House insiders. In August, a former aide from Trump’s first term said that Trump viewed the award as “the ultimate recognition” of his historical identity. Only two sitting US presidents have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize—Woodrow Wilson in 1920 and Barack Obama in 2009.

Meanwhile, former President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden has been quick to take a dig at Trump's Nobel ambitions. Last week, he joked that he was nominating Trump for the Peace Prize because he had ended wars with Iran "at least 38 times." On social media, Hunter wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "No president in history has ended the same war so many times. And he's nowhere near ending it. This is a record that deserves recognition from the Nobel Committee."
