NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani used his America250 anniversary speech on Friday to present a sharply different vision of the United States from President Donald Trump, emphasizing immigration, inclusion, and the nation’s founding ideals without mentioning the president by name.
Delivering his remarks from New York City Hall behind a desk once used by George Washington, Mamdani said America has always been strengthened by people who come from around the world in search of opportunity.
“America is not reserved for those with the right accent or the right shade of skin,” he said, arguing that the country’s identity is defined by its commitment to freedom, equality, and opportunity rather than ethnicity or birthplace.
The speech was delivered before a group of recently naturalized U.S. citizens, many of whom waved American flags during the ceremony. Mamdani reflected on his own immigration journey, noting that he was born in Uganda and became a U.S. citizen in 2018.
He also criticized political leaders who seek to divide Americans by exploiting differences, describing fear and exclusion as the “oldest” and “cheapest” tools in politics. While he never mentioned Trump by name, the remarks came as the president has continued to defend stricter immigration policies and a more nationalist vision of the country.
Mamdani urged Americans to see patriotism not as ignoring the nation’s shortcomings but as working to fulfill its founding promises. He said every generation has a responsibility to help build a more inclusive and just America.
The speech was intentionally timed to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, offering a message that America’s future depends on remaining open, diverse, and committed to its democratic ideals.
