Opener Tanjid Hasan Tamim scored a century for Bangladesh in the first innings of the Darwin Test. Captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto and middle order batsman Mehdi Hasan Miraj were on the way to a century with great batting.
Australian veteran pacer Josh Hazlewood reached the milestone of 300 wickets in Test cricket by dismissing Shanto and Mirage for 84 and 65 runs. Through this, he entered the 300-wicket-taking club as Australia's ninth bowler.
After reaching the milestone, 35-year-old Hazlewood said in an interview to Kayo Sports, "I don't think much about such milestones during the match. But to see your name next to other greats and to be able to play with all three of them together is really cool.
Earlier, he joined teammates Nathan Lyon, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc in a historic group. This is the first time in cricket history that a team has four bowlers playing together who each have 300 or more wickets in Tests. Among Australia's bowlers with 300 wickets, only Glenn McGrath (21.64), Pat Cummins (22.21) and Dennis Lillee (23.92) have a better bowling average than Hazlewood (24.02).
Hazlewood did not give up even though he missed the catch at the beginning of the innings in the current Test. On the second day, he dismissed Muminul Haque to bring down the crucial pair. Then, with the new ball, Nazmul Hossain sent Shanta (84 runs) back to Sazghar with a great delivery.
With the Australian bowlers tiring in the heat on the third day, he kept the pressure on by dismissing Hasan Mahmood and Taijul Islam. Finally, in the 26th over of the innings, Mehdi Hasan forced Miraj to take a catch behind the wicket to complete the milestone of his 300th career wicket.
He then dismissed Ibadat Hossain for the fourth of his Test career and 6 wickets in his first innings after 9 years.
At the end of Bangladesh's first innings, Hazlewood praised the fighting spirit of the Tiger batters and said, 'They fought hard to stay on the wicket. The situation was quite difficult, but we persevered in the end.'
