Myanmar selects 300,000 Rohingya to be taken back from Bangladesh

The Myanmar junta government said on Saturday (August 15) that more than 300,000 of the Rohingya who have taken refuge in Bangladesh are former residents of their Rakhine state. If the current security situation in Rakhine improves, they will take these Rohingyas back to their country.

The Rohingya crisis is about to complete nine years. The announcement came at a time when Myanmar's Foreign Ministry is making headlines. In August 2017, the Myanmar army began a brutal crackdown on the Rohingya following an attack on security forces in Rakhine. More than 700,000 Rohingya crossed the border to save their lives and took refuge in Bangladesh. Several hundred thousand more Rohingya were already living there.

The Myanmar army's horrific and brutal campaign led the entire world, including the United Nations, to accuse them of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The Myanmar government never wants to accept the Rohingyas as citizens of its country. On the contrary, they call the Rohingyas 'Bengalis'. Through this, they claim that these people are actually residents of Bangladesh and that they were living in Myanmar illegally.

Myanmar also said in its statement that Bangladesh had provided it with a list of 828,824 Rohingya as of the end of July. Of these, it had verified the information of 426,545 people. Based on this verified information, it had confirmed 387,997 people as former residents of its country.
