Sultan of Brunei strips daughter-in-law of royal title

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei has stripped one of his daughters-in-law of all royal honors and titles. The 33-year-old daughter-in-law is named Pengiran Rabiatul Adabiya. She was given this punishment for her “indecent” behavior that was not befitting the royal family and disrespecting the 80-year-old sultan.

However, no clear information has been released about what exactly Pengiran did that made the sultan so angry. The announcement was made directly from the Sultan’s palace. The announcement only said that such behavior is absolutely not expected from the wife of a member of the royal family.

Pengiran married Brunei’s Prince Abdul Malik in 2015. Their lavish wedding celebration lasted for 10 days at the palace. The couple have four daughters. The palace said that although Pengiran's title was taken away, his four daughters will retain their royal honors and titles.

Brunei, located next to Malaysia, is a small but wealthy country. Since gaining independence from the British in 1984, Hassanal Bolkiah has been the sole ruler and prime minister of the country. He is currently the world's longest-reigning monarch.

He had previously been widely criticized around the world for proposing the death penalty for homosexuality and adultery. At the time, famous stars such as George Clooney also protested his decision.
