Cape Verde made history on their World Cup debut. They advanced to the round of 32 after finishing second in Group H with a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia in Houston. With this achievement, they became the smallest country in terms of population to reach the knockout stages of a World Cup and the first team to reach the knockout stages on their debut since 2010.

Cape Verde achieved this remarkable feat by drawing three times in the same group with strong teams like Spain and Uruguay.

Coach Buvista spoke at a press conference with the country’s flag wrapped around his body. After learning about the record, he said, ‘We? I didn’t know. So we became an example that if there is focus, determination and organization, even small countries can aim big. We showed that nothing is impossible. We represented not only our country, but also Africa and small countries around the world.’

He added, ‘I have always said that Cape Verde will one day be on this stage, even if it is late. It was difficult, but we went through one step after another. We showed the world that we are not afraid of the difficult. Now we are in the knockout stages, it is a great moment for our people, for everyone to know our team and especially for the players.’

Cape Verde will then face Argentina in Miami on Friday. Speaking about Messi’s team, Buvista said, ‘We are proud to play against Argentina. We have a long relationship with this country. But the most important thing is that no matter who the opponent is, we will play as we are. We know that Argentina has some of the best players in the world, and there is Messi, who many consider to be the best of all time.’

During the match, the sounds of Cape Verde players celebrating could be heard from the dressing room. The joy was going on just a few yards from the press conference room.
