The Central Bank has ordered that the branches and sub-branches of scheduled banks in the Ambazar area in four districts of Rajshahi division will remain open every Saturday from today (Saturday, June 27) to facilitate transactions by traders, shopkeepers and farmers during the ongoing mango season. The service will be provided until July 31. Bangladesh Bank has recently issued instructions in this regard in a notification.
The notification said that during the ongoing mango season, permanent and temporary mango markets have been set up in various upazilas of Chapainawabganj (Shibganj, Chapainawabganj Sadar, Gomostapur and Bholahat upazilas), Naogaon (Sapahar, Porsha and Niamatpur upazilas), Rajshahi and Natore districts of the greater Rajshahi region.
In order to ensure adequate supply and deposit of cash in the branches of scheduled banks adjacent to these mango markets and to eliminate the risks related to cash storage of traders, necessary measures have been taken to keep the branches and sub-branches of the banks open on a limited scale on every Saturday on the weekly holiday until July 31, ensuring adequate security.
The banks concerned will have to operate these branches and sub-branches at their own discretion, ensuring adequate security measures. The circular said that this directive has been issued in the public interest under the powers conferred by Section 45 of the Banking Companies Act, 1991.
