Japan have never reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals despite four previous attempts. This time, after an impressive group-stage campaign, the Blue Samurai face five-time world champions Brazil in the Round of 32. While history and statistics heavily favour Brazil, Brazilian legend Zico believes Japan are capable of pulling off a major upset.
Widely regarded as one of Brazil's greatest footballers and nicknamed the "White Pele" for his elegant style of play, Zico praised the current Japanese side while admitting his loyalty remains with Brazil.
"Of course I will support Brazil, but Japan can win as well. This Japan team plays real football. I think it will be a wonderful match," he said.
Despite Brazil's pedigree, Zico insists Japan have no reason to fear their opponents.
"Japan are ready to face any team. Over the past few years they have beaten Spain, Germany, England and even Brazil. Whoever the opponent is, Japan will be prepared," he added.
Zico managed Japan from 2002 to 2006 and was in charge when the Blue Samurai lost 4-1 to Brazil at the 2006 World Cup. Having closely followed the country's football development, he believes the current squad is vastly different from the one he coached.
"They have improved tactically, of course. But Japan's biggest problem was always mental. Now they know how to fight through difficult moments and how to come back after falling behind. They have learned that," Zico said.
Japan have emerged as one of the tournament's dark horses, going unbeaten in their last 10 international matches. Their recent run includes a 1-0 victory over England at Wembley, a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands, and an emphatic 4-0 win over Tunisia, results that have boosted confidence ahead of the clash with Brazil.
Although Japan have never beaten Brazil in a World Cup match, they will take encouragement from their most recent meeting. Last year in Tokyo, Japan defeated Brazil 3-2 in a friendly, their first-ever victory over the South American giants. They will now hope to repeat that feat on football's biggest stage.
