US President Donald Trump has threatened that if a European country imposes a digital services tax (Digital Services Tax) on US technology companies, then 100 percent import duties will be imposed on all goods exported from that country to the United States.
Trump gave this warning in a post on his social media, Truth Social.
Trump said several European countries are planning to introduce such a tax and some are very close to implementing it.
He said, if any such tax is implemented, the United States will immediately take countermeasures. In this case the existing bilateral trade agreements will also become practically ineffective.
He also wrote, "Whichever country imposes this tax, all goods sent to the United States will immediately be subject to 100 percent tariffs."
UK location
The UK has introduced a 2 percent digital services tax since 2020. The tax mainly applies to major search engines, social media and online marketplaces with global digital revenue of over £500m and UK revenue of over £2.5m.
It includes major US technology companies like Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon.
According to the UK Treasury, this tax generated more than £800 million in revenue in the 2024-25 financial year. In the previous financial year, this income was 678 million pounds.
Earlier in April this year, Trump had complained that the UK had targeted US companies with this tax. Then he said, 'They want to collect money easily. That is why they are taking advantage of our country.
Location of European countries
Trump's warning came within days of a new trade agreement between the United States and the European Union (EU).
Meanwhile, Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Michael Damianos, said that the EU is capable of responding quickly and appropriately if the agreement is violated or the interests of the European Union are harmed.
France, Italy and Spain currently impose a 3 percent digital services tax on big tech companies. In addition, several other European countries have introduced or are planning to introduce similar taxes.
Trump's stance on tariffs
Since becoming president again in 2025, Trump has taken the initiative to impose high import tariffs on various countries. In February of this year, the US Supreme Court canceled his proposed 10 percent global tariff.
However, the United States has recently announced the imposition of new tariffs of 10 to 12.5 percent on the products of almost all major importing countries in the world. The United States claims that these countries are not taking enough steps to prevent forced labor.
