World Cup debutants Cape Verde have made history by reaching the knockout stage without winning a single group match. The African side secured a place in the Round of 32 after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia, combined with Uruguay's defeat to Spain, setting up a meeting with defending champions Argentina.
Cape Verde impressed throughout the group stage, with goalkeeper Vozinha playing a crucial role in earning draws against former world champions Spain and Uruguay. They followed those performances with another clean sheet against Saudi Arabia in Houston, finishing the group stage unbeaten with three draws.
Despite dominating large spells of the match against Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde were unable to find the breakthrough, as the game ended 0-0. However, the result proved enough after Spain defeated Uruguay in the group's other fixture, eliminating the South American side and sending the tournament newcomers through as Group H runners-up.
At the final whistle, Cape Verde's players turned their attention to the giant screen inside the stadium to follow the outcome of the Spain-Uruguay match. Once Spain's victory was confirmed, celebrations erupted as the island nation secured a historic place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
Cape Verde will now face reigning world champions Argentina in the Round of 32. The match is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 a.m. Bangladesh time on July 4, offering the African underdogs a chance to continue their remarkable World Cup journey against one of the tournament favourites.
