Just before the start of the World Cup, the Bangladesh national football team has received a special invitation from the Maldives. The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) is going to organize a four-nation football tournament during the 'FIFA window' from June 1 to 9, before the World Cup starts on June 11.

This special tournament has been planned to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Maldivian football. Neighboring country Sri Lanka has already given its final consent to participate in the competition. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) received the formal invitation letter on Monday (January 5). Besides, another South Asian country Nepal has also been invited to the tournament.

BFF General Secretary Imran Hossain confirmed the invitation and said that a final decision will be taken on the Maldives' proposal soon through high-level discussions in the federation. Since the tournament held in June is held during the FIFA window, there is a strong possibility of Bangladesh getting expatriate stars Hamza Chowdhury and Shamit Som in the team. Since clubs are forced to release players during the FIFA window, the BFF wants to use this opportunity to increase the strength of the national team. It is worth noting that Bangladesh also participated in the tournament organized to mark the 50th anniversary of Maldivian football in 2000.
