AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed his hope to see a hijab-wearing woman as the Prime Minister of India in the future. His comment has created a political storm in India. In response to Owaisi's comment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Prime Minister of India will 'always be a Hindu'.

Now Asaduddin Owaisi has responded to Himanta. He said that the Chief Minister of Assam, who is devoid of constitutional knowledge, has a 'tubelight' on his head. In the words of the AIMIM leader, 'He has a tubelight inside his head. He has taken an oath on the Constitution. Where is it written in the Constitution (that only Hindus will be the Prime Minister of India)?’

On Saturday (January 10), while addressing an election rally in Solapur, Maharashtra, Owaisi highlighted the inclusive nature of the Indian Constitution. He said that according to the Indian Constitution, a person of any religion or caste can become the Prime Minister. The ‘debate’ started after that statement.

Owaisi was heard saying, ‘The Constitution of Pakistan clearly states that only a person of one religion can become the Prime Minister of that country. But (the head of the Constitution Drafting Committee of India) Babasaheb (Ambedkar)’s Constitution says that any citizen of India can become the Prime Minister, Chief Minister or Mayor. My dream is that one day the Prime Minister of this country will be a girl wearing a hijab.’

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly criticized Owaisi’s comment. He admitted that the Constitution does not prevent anyone from becoming the Prime Minister. However, he said at the same time, ‘Anyone can become the Prime Minister. But India is a Hindu state, a Hindu civilization. We always believe and we are fully confident that the Prime Minister of India will always be a Hindu.’

The Assam Chief Minister’s remarks on Sunday (January 11) drew a sharp reaction. Owaisi reminded him of the oath he took on the Constitution. At the same time, Congress MP Imran Masood urged the BJP leader to be restrained in his use of language.

Speaking to the media, Owaisi said, “The Constitution of Pakistan states that only a person from one community can be the Prime Minister and President of that country. In our country, the Constitution was given by Babasaheb Ambedkar. He was much more intelligent and educated than Himanta Biswa Sarma.” He called the Assam Chief Minister’s remarks “inconsiderate”.
