Despite failing to do much with the bat in the first Test against South Africa, which began in Lahore on Sunday (October 12), Pakistan's star batsman and former captain Babar Azam created history. He had to return with just 23 runs, but he had already witnessed a unique achievement in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Babar became the first Asian batsman to reach the milestone of 3,000 runs in the WTC.
Pakistan was ahead in the Lahore Test with a 161-run partnership between Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq, but the Proteas came back in the match later. However, Babar completed his historic 3,000 runs by hitting a four at inside edge off a ball bowled by Senuran Muthusamy at the beginning of the innings.
Babar currently has 3,021 runs in 67 innings, which comes at an average of 47.25 and a strike rate of 54.1. He is currently ranked just below England's Jack Crawley, who has 3,041 runs, but that came in 95 innings.
The closest Asian batsman to Babar is India's current Test captain Shubman Gill. Gill has 2,826 runs in 71 innings. He completed his 10th Test century with an unbeaten 129 in the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi. It is expected that he will soon enter the 3,000-run club.
