This is the first time in the 41-year history of the Asia Cup that India and Pakistan are going to face each other in the final of the tournament. The two arch-rivals of world cricket will clash for the title at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (September 28) at 8:30 pm Bangladesh time.
Considering the recent form and style of play, India should be ahead in the fight between the two teams. However, Pakistan is still far ahead in the finals between India and Pakistan. So far, Pakistan has won 7 of the 10 finals in cricket history, while India has won 3.
India and Pakistan played the final of the seven-team World Championship in Melbourne, Australia in 1985. Sunil Gavaskar's India won the first India-Pakistan final of the global tournament by 8 wickets in a thrilling match. However, Pakistan won the next three finals and took a hat-trick.
Pakistan defeated India by 1 wicket in the final of the six-team Austral-Asia Cup in 1986. Then in 1991, Pakistan won the final of the four-team Wills Trophy by 72 runs. Pakistan won the final of the Austral Asia Cup in 1994 by 39 runs. All three tournaments were held in Sharjah.
Then India shook off the ghost in the final of the Independent Cup in 1994. India won the final of the tri-nation tournament in Dhaka by 3 wickets. In 1999, Pakistan won the tri-nation Pepsi Cup in Bengaluru and the Coca-Cola Cup in Sharjah by 123 runs and 8 wickets respectively.
Meanwhile, India and Pakistan faced each other in the final of the first T20 World Cup in 2007. MS Dhoni's team won the great battle between the two arch-rivals in Johannesburg, South Africa, by 5 runs. The following year, Pakistan won the tri-nation Kitley Cup final in Dhaka by 25 runs.
Later, the bilateral and tri-nation series between the two teams were stopped due to political conflicts. India's dominance in the ICC and ACC battles increased. India reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 at The Oval. However, underdog Pakistan won by a huge margin of 180 runs.
India and Pakistan were in the same group in this year's Asia Cup. India comfortably defeated Pakistan in both the group stage and Super Four matches. Therefore, India will enter the field as the favorite in the final. However, past statistics do not allow Pakistan to write 'finish' in the final.
