Natural gas used in the home is an important part of our daily lives. From cooking to using heaters during winter, dependence on gas is increasing. However, even a small gas leak can cause a major accident. Therefore, it is important to know the signs of gas leakage in advance.

Officer-in-charge of the Media Cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, Md. Shahjahan Sikder said, awareness is very necessary to prevent gas leakage. It is possible to avoid major accidents if you are careful in advance.

Gas is stored at high pressure in cylinders or pipelines used in the home. If a small crack or hole is formed somewhere, the gas starts to come out through there. If this gas accumulates in a closed room, the risk of explosion or fire increases.

Signs that indicate gas leakage

Abnormal odor

The most obvious sign of gas leakage is a strong smell like rotten eggs. Although natural gas is actually odorless, a chemical called 'mercaptan' is added to it for safety. This smell can be easily detected if there is a leak somewhere. If you smell such a smell, you should be alert.

Hissing sound

If there is a leak in a cylinder or gas pipe, a hissing sound can be heard when gas is released through a crack. If you hear such a sound, it is necessary to check the matter quickly.

Drying of plants

In the event of a gas leak, small plants inside or around the house may suddenly dry up due to lack of oxygen. If the plants in the tub or small plants in the garden are damaged unnecessarily, you should pay attention to the gas line.

Physical illness

In the event of a gas leak, oxygen in the air in the house may decrease. This may cause problems such as dizziness, nausea, headache, fatigue or difficulty breathing. If such symptoms appear, it is important to take immediate action.

What to do in case of a gas leak

If you suspect a gas leak, move to a safe place immediately. Do not use lights, switches, electrical appliances or fire under any circumstances. Open doors and windows to provide ventilation and, if possible, turn off the main gas line. Also, inform the fire service immediately.

What to do to avoid accidents

Regular inspection and maintenance of gas lines is necessary. Keep the gas connection turned off when not in use. A carbon monoxide detector can be installed in the house. Keeping the main gas switch in an easily accessible place and having a fire extinguisher is important for safety.

Gas leakage often causes major accidents silently. Therefore, knowing the symptoms and taking quick action is the most effective way to protect life and property.
