In the first two days of the start of transactions of Sammilit Islami Bank, formed by merging five Sharia-based banks, depositors have withdrawn more than 107 crore taka. At the same time, 44 crore taka has been deposited in the bank as new deposits.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur gave this information at a press conference on Monday (January 5) afternoon. He said that a total of 13,314 customers have withdrawn 107 crore 77 lakh taka. Of these, customers of the defunct Exim Bank have withdrawn the most, 66 crore taka. The total deposit in two days has been 44 crore taka.
Ahsan H Mansur said that the new deposits deposited in contrast to the withdrawals are a reflection of the confidence of customers. This proves that the people have faith in the initiatives of the government and Bangladesh Bank. The governor said that 95 percent of the customers of the five merged banks (Exim, Social Islami, First Security, Union and Global Islami Bank) are small depositors. Currently, general customers can withdraw up to a maximum of Tk 2 lakh under deposit insurance. Later, large depositors will also be able to withdraw money in stages. In addition, depositors can take up to 20 percent loan facilities against their deposits.
He said, our main challenge now is to quickly launch the IT systems and utility services of the banks, so that customers can pay bills without any problems. On the one hand, we have to reduce costs, and on the other hand, we have to increase the income of the new bank.
