Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the government is trying to pass two laws in a hurry. He made this allegation in a message sent by the party's Joint Secretary Muhammad Munir Hossain on Friday (November 28).

Mirza Fakhrul said, "We have learned from reliable sources that the current interim government is trying to pass two laws in a hurry—one is the amended Police Commission Act, the other is the NGO-related law. We think that the government has some other motive behind passing these laws before the elections, which will obstruct the path of democratic transition."

Commenting that it would not be appropriate to pass laws on such important issues in a hurry without the mandate of the people, he said, "We think that it would be right to formulate the laws on the above issues through debate in the next National Parliament." I urge the government to refrain from taking such steps.

Earlier, at the inaugural session of the biennial council of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) at the National Press Club in the afternoon, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "Now is a time when the entire nation is waiting for us to be able to return to a democratic system through the elections in February. We all want this. At the same time, we must remember that if we want to return to democracy, we must also value the freedom of expression of others."
