The United States has also attacked Iran's important Kharg Island. The oil-rich territory is more important for the world oil market than it is for the Islamic Republic. About 90-95 percent of Iran's total crude oil is exported to the world market through this island.
Known as the 'heart' or 'lifeline' of the country's economy, this territory is home to the Islamic Republic's main port and the largest waterway, which is mainly used for transporting oil and gas.
US President Donald Trump announced on Friday (March 13) that the country's military has bombed military installations on Iran's Kharg Island near the Strait of Hormuz, in the face of escalating hostilities and a deep global economic crisis caused by disruptions to energy flows.
Trump said in his Truth Social post that the US Central Command had carried out one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East and had completely destroyed all military targets on Iran's valuable asset, the Kharg Island.
However, Trump also said that the US has so far avoided striking Iran's oil infrastructure.
