Dr. Shafiqur Rahman to take oath as Jamaat Ameer on Friday

According to the constitution of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the current Ameer of the party, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has been elected as the Ameer for the third time for the 2026-2028 term. His formal oath-taking will be held at 6:30 pm tomorrow, Friday (November 28) at Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, the capital. The matter was confirmed in a press release on Thursday (November 27).
The party has informed that as part of the beginning of the new term, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman will take oath as Ameer before the Chief Election Commissioner in the presence of members of the Central Majlis-e-Shura, Central Working Committee and Executive Council members.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami confirmed his election for the third term through a press release on November 2. In the history of the party, only Professor Ghulam Azam and Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami have served as Ameer for three consecutive terms.
Chief Election Commissioner and Assistant Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum, who is in charge of conducting the internal elections of Jamaat, officially announced the results of the 'Amir' election on the night of November 1. The Election Commission said that voting was held from October 9 to October 25 from the Rukons across the country through secret ballot. After the counting of votes, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was elected as the Amir again for the term of 2026-2028 after receiving the highest number of votes.
According to the constitution, the Amir is elected for a three-year term by direct secret ballot of the members of the National Council of Jamaat-e-Islami. The elected Amir has to take oath before the Chief Election Commissioner in front of the central leadership.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was born on October 31, 1958 in a family in Bhatera Union of Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar. His father is the late Mohammad Abru Mia and mother is the late Khatirun Nesa. He currently lives in the Sabujbag area of Shahparan Police Station in Sylhet metropolis.
During his education, he obtained his SSC from Baramchal High School in 1974, HSC from Sylhet MC College in 1976 and MBBS degree from Sylhet Medical College (present MAG Osmani Medical College) in 1983. After completing his education, he joined the medical profession and became active in politics.
In the beginning of his political career, he was associated with Jasd Chhatra League and joined the organization in 1973. Later, in 1977, he joined Islami Chhatra Shibir and served as the president of Sylhet Medical College branch and Sylhet city branch. In 1984, he joined Jamaat-e-Islami and gradually served as the Sylhet city, district and metropolitan Ameer.
In 2016, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was elected Secretary General of Jamaat. Later, he became Ameer for the first time on November 12, 2019. After being elected Ameer for the second time on October 31, 2022, he is now sitting in the top leadership of the party for the third time.
