A mysterious, plant-covered island has surfaced in Williston Reservoir north of Mackenzie, British Columbia, Canada, leaving locals baffled.

The island is clearly visible in a satellite image taken on July 20. Its area is estimated at 105,486 square feet. However, on August 5, the island completely disappeared from satellite data.

The island was first reported by locals earlier this month. Authorities were initially wary because images could be distorted using artificial intelligence. Later, satellite images confirmed that the island was real.

Bob Gammer, a spokesman for British Columbia Hydro, said the island may not have sunk. Instead, it may have drifted toward shore in a more protected part of the reservoir.

Authorities are now examining the new images to learn more about this mysterious floating island.
