The history of Bangladeshi film ’The Difficult Bride’ at the Venice Film Festival

Bangladeshi film 'The Difficult Bride' has created history at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival in Italy. Directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, the film had its world premiere at the 83rd edition of the festival. The film has become the first full-length Bangladeshi film to be selected in the prestigious 'Orizont' competition section and made it to the Venice screen.

The film's first screening took place on Saturday evening at the Sala Casino Theatre in the Palazzo del Cinema, the main venue of the 12-day festival that began on September 2. The second screening was held on Sunday at the Sala Darsena Theatre. In addition, two more screenings of the film are scheduled for Monday afternoon local time at the Astra-1 and Astra-2 Theatres.

The idea for 'The Difficult Bride' came from childhood memories, a beauty parlor, and a scary story about a wedding. Director Rubaiyat Hossain has been thinking about this story for almost two decades. A story she heard in a beauty parlor as a child and some memories of that time have haunted her for a long time. From that experience, the film is made around a beauty parlor in Dhaka, a wedding, and childhood fears.

One of the most notable aspects of the film is its all-female production team. Women led almost all important departments of the film, including cinematography, editing, and production design, except for the background music.

In this context, director Rubaiyat Hossain said that she was amazed by the skill and speed of the female technicians. At the same time, she believes that the film will also play a role in breaking the common misconception that women cannot make good films.

Newcomer Zainin Chowdhury Karim plays the central role in 'The Difficult Bride'. Rikita Nandini Shimu and Sunerah Binte Kamal are seen in various important roles. Ajmeri Haque Badhan and Damir Khan play guest roles.

The film is a joint production of Khana Talkies of France, Portugal, Norway, Germany and Bangladesh. After the Venice Film Festival, the film is scheduled to be screened in various parts of the world this year. 'The Difficult Bride' will be released in theaters in Bangladesh next year.

The Venice debut of 'The Difficult Bride' is therefore not just a film screening, but also a significant historical achievement for the country's full-length films in the international journey of Bangladeshi cinema.
