Bangladesh provides $1 million in aid to flood-hit Nepal

The Bangladesh government has donated US$1 million (approximately Tk123 million) to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing relief, rehabilitation, and humanitarian activities following the recent devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.

A letter from Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman addressed to Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah was handed over to Nepalese Ambassador Ghanshyam Bhandari on Thursday (September 3). State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir expressed support at the time.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir signed the condolence book opened at the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka on September 1. A condolence resolution was also passed in the Bangladesh National Parliament on August 27, expressing condolences over the terrible disaster in Nepal.

This assistance from Bangladesh will be used for ongoing rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities in Nepal.

According to the latest information from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 1,252 people have died in the devastating floods so far. Another 4,216 are missing. About 12,000 people have been rescued.

On August 26, a massive flash flood occurred on the Bhote Koshi River after a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan region. The floodwaters, mud and rocks caused widespread destruction in a wide area including Rasua, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan.

The United Nations Development Programme said an estimated 2.2 million tonnes of debris have accumulated in the affected areas following the floods and mudslides. This has caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure including homes, roads, bridges, and hydroelectric power stations. A full assessment of the damage is still being carried out.
