UN warning about global warming

The world's average temperature is expected to exceed the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) in the coming years, the UN Environment Programme said, adding that this would lead to more extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and storms, putting severe pressure on nature, glaciers and low-lying coastal cities.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is theoretically possible, but it is highly uncertain. This will require rapid reductions in carbon emissions and effective measures to remove harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. 

It is worth noting that in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, world leaders pledged to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in order to protect the world from extreme weather. 

However, UNEP said that since there is currently a strong risk of temperatures exceeding this specific limit, more attention should now be paid to how long the temperature remains above this limit.

The report says that every moment of delay in action and every moment of warming above 1.5 degrees Celsius will increase the risk. Even if temperatures are reduced in the future, the organization also fears that the irreparable damage to nature will not be able to be reversed. 

Even in the best-case scenario, if countries fully implement their current commitments, temperatures could still be limited to a maximum of 1.8 degrees Celsius. If current trends continue, this temperature is likely to reach about 2.6 degrees Celsius by 2100. 

Carbon removal methods, such as planting new trees, are essential to controlling rising temperatures. However, researchers have made it clear that these methods of pulling carbon from the atmosphere can never be a substitute for reducing direct carbon emissions from factories and other sources.

According to a United Nations report, the world's temperature could soon exceed the 1.5 degree mark, so there is an urgent need to reduce carbon emissions to avoid irreparable damage.
