Iran’s new proposal on Hormuz is raising global concerns

New tensions have arisen around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important waterways. Iran has directly rejected Oman's proposal for joint supervision of the strait. At the same time, Tehran has made a counter-proposal of its own.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that Tehran's security concerns and demands for control have not been given enough importance in Oman's proposal. Therefore, Iran wants a framework where their role in this strategic waterway will be the main one.

Although neither Oman nor Iran has disclosed the details of their proposal. However, according to analysts, the disagreement over the control of Hormuz could create new uncertainties in the geopolitics of the Middle East.

About 20 percent of the world's total oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are transported through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, any dispute or tension over this waterway could have an immediate impact on the international energy market, oil prices and global trade.

So Iran's new position has sparked renewed concern in the international community.
