Hurricane ’Lala’ is approaching, more than 40 thousand residents are without power

Hurricane 'Lala' is approaching the US state of Hawaii with strong winds and heavy rain. More than 40 thousand residents across the state have been left without power due to the impact of this powerful storm. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center has warned that the situation can be 'extremely dangerous to life'.

According to poweroutage.com, as of 2:14 pm local time, 42,889 power connections were disconnected in Hawaii. Of these, 31,792 are on the Big Island and 7,203 are in Maui County. Maui County includes the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai.

The National Hurricane Center's 2 pm forecast said that 10 to 20 inches (25 to 51 centimeters) of rain could fall on the Big Island. Some areas could see up to 25 inches of rain. East Maui is expected to see 8 to 12 inches and West Maui is expected to see 4 to 6 inches.

The hurricane center said the rain could cause life-threatening flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous and hilly areas.

Authorities are warning of more power outages as the storm moves west across Hawaii. Hawaiian Electric said some areas could be without power for extended periods, even overnight.

The Times of Israel also reported that several power poles and structures were damaged by fallen trees on the Big Island's Hamakua coast. Power department workers are inspecting about 42 miles (67.6 kilometers) of power lines there.
