The United States will take control of the strategically important waterway of Hormuz and Washington should be paid to guard this global trade route, US President Donald Trump has said.

He made this claim in a telephone interview given on Fox News' 'Fox and Friends' program on Monday (July 13).

While talking about the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's main energy supply routes, Donald Trump said, "We are going to take this channel into our own hands and we will probably run it. We are going to be the guardian of this channel. We will probably call it the 'Guardian Angel of the Strait'. And we must be compensated or paid for fulfilling this responsibility."

This waterway between Iran and Oman carries a large part of the world's crude oil and gas, the security of which has long been a source of tension in global politics. Earlier, Tehran had said that Iran was continuing talks with mediators to avoid any kind of tension in the Middle East. In such a situation, the US President's controversial remarks have created a new sensation in the international arena.
