US President Donald Trump has blamed his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the decision to launch a military strike against Iran.
NDTV reported that on Monday (March 23) local time, he said at the ‘Memphis Safe Task Force’ roundtable meeting that Hegseth was the first top official in his administration to advocate a military strike against Iran.
Trump’s comments have sparked heated debate in Washington, as there are conflicting explanations within the administration about the decision to launch a war. At a roundtable meeting of the ‘Memphis Safe Task Force’, Trump indicated that Hegseth was the first top official in his administration to advocate a military strike against Iran.
“Pete, I think you were the first to speak up and say, ‘Let’s do it, because you can’t let them get a nuclear weapon,’” Trump said, describing the moments before authorizing the operation. “I called Pete. I called General Cain. I called a lot of our talented people,” he said, referring to discussions about how to deal with the growing threat from Iran.
The war, which began with a U.S. strike in late February, has now escalated into a broader regional conflict involving Iran and its allies. U.S. officials have described the operation as an attempt to destroy Iran’s missile program, drone production capacity and naval power.
According to behind-the-scenes reports, the Trump administration was divided on whether to go ahead with the strike. Trump acknowledged that Vice President J.D. Vance, a longtime critic of military intervention abroad, was not enthusiastic about the operation. Although he did not publicly oppose it.
Other influential figures, such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and media mogul Rupert Murdoch, were reportedly encouraging the United States to take military action, but some advisers advised caution.
