The US is pressuring Ukraine to hold presidential elections. This information was reported by Reuters in a report citing two senior officials of the administration led by President Donald Trump.
Members of the US delegation recently met with government representatives of Ukraine and Russia in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner were in the US delegation.
A Trump administration official said on Sunday (February 8) that the meeting in Abu Dhabi, in addition to a permanent ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, also discussed the Ukrainian presidential election, and that Trump administration representatives urged Ukraine to hold elections quickly.
The Trump administration official told Reuters, "We have told Ukrainian representatives that we want to end this war quickly. We don’t have much time.”
Reuters contacted spokespeople for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, but none of them responded to requests for comment.
Zelensky was elected president of Ukraine in the May 2019 election. His constitutional term ends in May 2024.
However, he has remained in power, extending the military rule by issuing decrees one after another.
