A map shared by a US government office on its social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has sparked a new controversy. The map of India released by US President Donald Trump's administration on Saturday (February 7) to announce an interim trade agreement with New Delhi shows the entire Kashmir as part of the country.
The map of India published by the US Trade Representative's office on X includes Pakistan-controlled Kashmir along with Kashmir under the control of the country. Even the same map includes 'Aksai Chin', a part of Kashmir under Chinese control. However, there was no immediate reaction from Pakistan and China on the issue.
Indian media are claiming that the Trump administration has practically accepted India's demands on the Kashmir issue through the new map. This is the first time that the US administration has released any maps of India that have not included Pakistan- and China-controlled Kashmir.
The US Trade Representative's office posted the map along with the announcement to announce that tariffs on several US products are being reduced in India. It says that many products, starting with almonds, are going to find new markets in India.
Recently, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country's Army Chief Asim Munir were seen maintaining close relations with Trump. Analysts believe that such a map will be considered a big blow to Islamabad.
The United States is also keen to increase trade with Pakistan. Several Indian and Pakistani media outlets have reported that they have already agreed to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Balochistan. Washington is also eyeing Pakistan's rare minerals, and they are also selling military equipment to Pakistan.
India and the United States announced the interim trade agreement in a joint statement early on Saturday morning, Indian time. Trump welcomed the trade agreement and thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal later said that if the new agreement comes into effect, the tariff on Indian goods will be 18 percent, opening the doors of the United States for Indian textiles, leather, plastics, home furnishings, and chemical industries. In addition, no tariffs will be imposed on many Indian products. According to the agreement, India is also reducing import duties on several products, including US agricultural products, and is even removing them for some products, according to the country's media.
