US President Donald Trump has indicated that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s days are coming to an end. Tensions between the two countries have increased further as the US military presence in the Caribbean has increased.
In an interview with CBS News’ popular program 60 Minutes on Sunday (November 2), host Nora O’Donnell asked Trump if Maduro’s days as president were coming to an end? Trump replied, “Yes, I think so.” However, he ruled out the possibility of war against Venezuela.
The US president did not comment directly on a possible ground attack, saying, “I don’t want to say that right now.”
Last Friday, Trump also denied media reports that the US was planning to attack military installations in Venezuela. He said that no decision had been made on the matter yet.
Earlier, several US media outlets claimed that the Trump administration had decided to launch an attack on military installations in Venezuela as part of its fight against so-called ‘narco-terrorism’ and that it could begin at any moment.
Washington has accused Maduro of running a criminal organization called the ‘Cartel de los Soles’, which the US declared a ‘specially designated terrorist organization worldwide’ in July.
Since the beginning of September, at least 14 attacks have been carried out in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing more than 64 people.
Human rights groups and legal experts have questioned the legality of these attacks. According to them, the US attack on the alleged drug boat violates international law.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk has described the attack as unacceptable and called for an independent investigation by the UN.
On the other hand, Maduro has called the US accusations outrageous and completely false. He said that Venezuela is not a producer of coca leaves. He referred to the US military action as a plan for a new and endless war.
